Supplements without Bidimensionalism

In seminal work, Potts (2005) claimed that the behavior of “supplements”—appositive relative clauses (ARCs) and nominals—offers a powerful argument in favor multidimensional semantics, one which certain expressions fail to interact scopally with various operators because their meaning is located new semantic dimension. Focusing on ARCs, data from English, French, German (Poschmann 2018), I explore an alternative Potts’s bidimensional account (a) appositives may be syntactically attached matrix scope, despite appearance embedded positions, as McCawley 1981; (b) contra McCawley, they also within scope other operators, case semantically them; (c) are conjoined rest sentence, but (d) give rise nontrivial projection facts when do not have scope. effect, proposed analysis accounts for most complexity these by positing more articulated syntax pragmatics, while eschewing use dimension meaning.
